4 points on the road for the Reds

Redruth got things underway on a gloomy but initially dry day in North Devon. An early penalty allowed the Reds to get up to the home 22. They kept the home side in their own territory and in trying to run out of defence a loose pass gave possession to the Reds, they went wide to the right where Luke Johnson was stopped just short, the ball was then switched wide to the left where the unmarked Adam Hall went over for the first score of the game on 5 mins. The conversion from the touchline was unsuccessful. The home side now started to get their hands on the ball and were dominating possession but making little headway against the Reds defence. A lot of play was taking place in midfield but a fumble in the backfield gave Biddy a scrum just outside of the visitors 22. Multiple phases led to an offside penalty which they put in the corner. The lineout maul went over for a try by hooker Zack Powell, the conversion went wide so the scores were level on 23 mins. The Reds were soon back in front, Biddy running the ball on halfway threw a speculative wide pass which Johnson plucked out to the air and showed the defence a clean pair of heels to score in the right hand corner. The conversion went wide and the Reds were 10-5 to the good on 26 mins. For the remainder of the half play remained fairly even with neither team able to sustain any significant pressure. In the last action of the half the Reds were moving the ball well just outside of the home 22 when they forced a penalty for offside. Ashley Hosking made no mistake from the kicking tee from a central position to end the half.
Half-Time: Bideford 5 – 13 Redruth 2nds

The home side had the first attack of the second period with a lineout deep in the visitors 22, the lineout maul failed to make the line and good defence from the pick-an-goes forced a knock-on. The Reds soon extended their lead when Biddy again went off side as the Reds were making good ground in their 22. Hosking popped over the penalty from in front to put the Reds 16-5 up on 50 mins. Bideford now went back on the attack and after a number of phases they forced a penalty with Lewis Thomas getting a yellow card. The penalty though was scuffed and failed to make touch. Bideford now put together their best move of the match, from a lineout on their own 10 metre they ran the ball and went through the phases taking play deep into the Reds 22. The home side forced a penalty and a quick tap caught the Reds on the hop for a try in the left-hand corner, the conversion was again unsuccessful and the score was now 16-10 to Redruth on 64 mins. A break from broken play and a kick ahead got the home side a lineout in the visitors 22. The tails of the home side were now definitely up but Tom Jago stole the lineout for the Red to clear. A high tackle though in midfield gave Biddy a shot at goal but the penalty from a very kickable position went wide. This was as close as the home side got. From a Biddy scrum just in their own half Jamie Murray stole the ball off his opposite number and the Reds stormed into the home 22. A penalty was put into the corner but the lineout was lost, Biddy however were unable to clear their 22. The Reds kept the pressure on and from a 5 metre scrum the Reds forced a penalty. From near the post Hosking put over the penalty to put the Reds 9 points clear with only 4 mins left on the clock. The Reds committed the cardinal sin of knocking on from the kick-off gifting the home side field position. The Reds defence however was up to the task and play ended a few minutes later. The Reds deserved their victory but the home side probably should have got bonus point for their efforts.

Next Saturday the Reds take on Tavistock at home and will look to continue their climb up the table.
