The Reds will be delighted to get another win on the road, making it 4 wins on the trot. The match was won in the first 40 when the Reds piled on 26 unanswered points and despite the second half being much more even the Reds were full value for their victory.
The Reds kicked off having first use of the breeze at The Memorial Ground and enjoyed a lot of early pressure keeping the home side pinned in their own half. Ironically it was Penryn’s first possession that led to the Reds first score, from a scrum the home side charged up to half-way but were stripped of the ball in the tackle. The ball was spun out to Dean Bonds who charged down the wing and in the tackle off loaded to the supporting Jacob Chapple who went over wide out for an unconverted try on 5 mins. The Reds continued to have the better of the play but were unable to add to the scoreboard, a penalty chance on 14 mins going wide of the posts. Penryn now had their best period of the match so far pressing the visitors in the 22 but the Reds defended well especially in the lineouts where they consistently disrupted possession. The mini-siege was lifted and a penalty on halfway was kicked into the 22. A perfect training ground move now followed from the line out, a back of the line peel saw Rob Dempsey fly onto the flat pass and go over without a finger being laid on him, Ashley Hosking added the extras to put the Reds 12-0 up on 21 mins.
The Reds added to their score some 10 mins later, Penryn stole a Reds lineout on halfway and moved the ball, a couple of phases later a telegraphed pass to the left was poached by Matt Blewitt who raced over from 40 metres for a converted try. In a case of anything the backs can do the forwards can do better, a few minutes later Penryn were attacking deep in the Reds half when Tom Jago seized on a loose pass and galloped in from fully 65 metres in a try that will surely make the end of season highlights reel. The conversion put the Reds 26-0 up and this proved to be the last score of the half despite the home side spending some considerable time in the Reds 22.
Half-Time: Penryn 0 – 26 Redruth 2nds
A few minutes into the second half Penryn were reduced to 14 men when Cockrell completely lost his cool and unleashed a series of punches at a Redruth player. The referee had no option but to show him the Red Card. Despite almost 10 minutes of constant Redruth pressure it was to be the home side that scored next. With Finlay Wolstencroft in the sin bin Penryn come storming at the Reds playing some good rugby and putting together a series of attacks challenging the Redruth defence. A penalty on the 22 was kicked to the 5 metre line and although the Reds defended that attack a lineout on the 22 broke back to home hooker, Hellier, who showed good pace and strength to score in the corner for the Boroughs first points. The conversion went wide to make it 5 – 26 to the visitors on 59 mins. After a period of play where neither side were able to put any pressure on the other the Reds earned a lineout in the home 22. They piled on the pressure with multiple phases challenging the home defence until finally the dam burst. Bonds seeing a mismatch in numbers finished off a move on the left had side running around under the posts for a converted try on 71 minutes. Both sides threw the ball around freely in the reminder of the match but neither was able to add to their tally.
The Reds have now played 6 of their 7 league matches away and their next match is, yes you’ve guessed it, away! On November 9th they go to The Mennaye Fields to take on the Pirates Amateurs.
