Redruth 2nd XV are back on the road yet again for the 6th time so far this season but face a relatively short trip down the road to take on Penryn at the Memorial Ground. After a rough start the Reds seem to have come to grips with the pace at this level and go into this week’s match having won three matches on the trot, one at home against Bideford and two on the road at Tavistock and Bude.
Penryn have won just two games this season, home wins over St Ives and Bideford and are currently 8th in the table, 4 points adrift of Redruth in 6th place.
Penryn are one of Cornwall’s oldest clubs although there is some uncertainty about how old they actually are. What is certain is that a Penryn club was founded in 1885 by John Marshal Thomas, a Redruth man. He was a jeweller and watchmaker who learned to play rugby at Blackheath while learning his trade in London.
Penryn was one of Cornwall’s most successful clubs in the pre-league era and has turned out a string of star players including George Jago, and Arthur Richards while, in later years Roger Hosen, Kenny Plummer and Vic Roberts all donned England shirts.
