Redruth 2nd XV have found it tough going in their first two matches in Counties 1 Western West. In both cases they have had to travel away to two of the form sides in this league and this Saturday face yet another trip across the Tamar, this time to face current table-toppers Plymstock Albion Oaks who finished 3rd in this league last season with 14 wins from their 22 matches.
The name of the opponents encompass two former clubs that amalgamated in 2007. The oldest one of these was Old Public Oaks, founded in 1927 and based on the former Public Central School which was situated in Coburg Street, Plymouth. It was supposed to be an Old Boys XV but in the early days they were so short of players, they borrowed boys from the schools fifth form.
Plymstock Albion RFC was founded in 1988 and played its rugby at King George V playing fields. In 1995 they decided to set up a youth section and club members took part in a sponsored walk from Plymstock to Bath to raise the necessary funds.
In 2007 the OPO’s and Plymstock Albion merged to form Plymstock Albion Oaks playing at their current home of Horsham fields where, over the years, new clubhouse facilities have been built. The cub runs three senior men’s XVs, two women’s XV’s, a Colts side and a full mini junior set up.
They currently sit at the top of the league table having beaten Tavistock 45-3 in the opening game of the season, and demolished Bideford 75-15 in a second away game last week.
