Reds run in 14 tries to stay top of the table

The Reds 2's kept up their title bid with a comprehensive win today in the sunshine on a surface that looked to be in perfect condition.
They ran in 14 tries against a game Helston side who did not give up and who deservedly scored a try of their own. Helston were competitive in the scrums and lineouts and did not give up easy yards down the middle but could not cope with the young Reds in the wider channels.

Helston kicked off playing towards the scoreboard and against the moderate breeze. Redruth got on the scoreboard almost immediately when good handling put Henry Eddy in for a try well converted by Dean Wills who was to slot 11 conversion on the day. A Nathan Dart kick took play from 22 to 22 and from there the Reds notched up another try through Mike Allen. The next score came after the Reds had run the ball from their own 22 taking play deep into the Helston half, a penalty was put into the corner and Bailey Williams was unstoppable from a few yards out, 19-0 after around 14 mins. Redruth dropped the kick-off and a penalty from the scrum allowed Helston to kick for the corner but the Reds defence was up to the task to keep their line intact. After the Reds had run the ball from their own 22 prop forward Luke Barnes was next to score neatly side stepping his way past the full back to go under the posts for the bonus point try. He added another only a few minutes later to put the Reds 31 points to the good. The Reds now spurned a couple of chances by ignoring the player on the outside in space but despite this it wasn't long before the front row combined to put Lewis Thomas in for a try. A Helston penalty on halfway for a hand in the scrum was taken quickly and their move ended only when the winger was tackled into touch just short of the line. A few minutes later the Helston centre broke through the middle and only an excellent last ditch tackle by Dart stopped the try. The Reds were now guilty of dropping the ball when under no pressure as concentration levels dropped. On the stroke of halftime Williams broke through the middle and a few phases later Dart went over for the 7th try of the afternoon.
Halt-Time: Redruth 45 - 0 Helston

The Reds had a frustrating start to the second period as a number of chances went begging through a combination of forward and inaccurate passing; Helston for their part were not missing any tackles. Finally an excellent sweeping multi phase move ended with Jarod Hambly going over just to the right of the posts. Helston replied almost immediately as Jack Davidson intercepted just outside the Reds 22, he was tap tackled just short but was able to go over through his own momentum for a converted try. Helston had further pressure forcing a line-out in Hellfire Corner but were unable to add to their score. The Reds got back on the attack and Louie Fowler-Beaton broke the line to go over near the posts, 59-7 on 64 mins. The Reds were looking for tries to improve their points difference (as they are a little way behind Saltash on this statistic) and were rampant in the final 15 mins as the visitors tired, they added 5 further tries through Barnes (for his hat-trick), Dean Wills Allen, Rob Dempsey and in the final move of the match Jacob Chapple.

Next week the Reds take on Illogan Park with a 2.30pm kick-off.
