Ahead for the vast majority of the match the Reds will rue a number of missed chances that allowed the home side to keep in touch. Showing great belief and enterprise Services kept going to the last and scored two late tries as the Reds conceded too many penalties for their own good. The Reds will wish that rugby halves only consisted of 39 minutes as the home side scored in both the 40th and 80th minutes!
The Reds got off to a good start, running back a clearance kick Shaun Buzza made good ground powering through the middle and drawing a penalty . This got the Reds into the 22 and a driving maul was illegally dropped within inches of the line. Unfortunately the following 5 metre line out was lost and the Reds missed out on an early chance to go ahead. A couple of penalties to the home side allowed them to get a 5 metre lineout of their own and they made no mistake with Services captain Matt Gregory going over for an unconverted try. The Reds hit back quickly through with a 5 metre line out of their own, the driving maul made no mistake with Matt Pritchard getting the unconverted try to tie things up on 11 minutes. The Reds were next to score; after the Services had spent a number of phases attacking in the Reds 22 a loose pass was picked off by Will Riglesford on the edge of the 22 and he went the distance to touch down under the posts, Dean Wills adding the extras to put the Reds ahead for the first time. Devonport attacked again in the Reds 22 with a couple of 5 metre line outs but the Reds defence was secure. The Reds though were conceding too many penalties and the Services got back in the 22 and Jack King saw yellow for another penalty offence in the 22. Another penalty and another warning followed but at the following line out maul Services went offside and the Reds were able to clear. Some 5 minutes later the Reds were down to 13, Shaun Buzza getting a yellow card for persistent offences. From the resulting 5 metre line out maul the Reds did well to hold the maul up to earn a defensive scrum. From a line out on the 22 Services finally got their score, taking advantage of the extra men they spread the ball wide and full-back Billy Orchard went over for an unconverted try in the last action of the first half.
Devonport Services 10 - 12 Redruth
The first action of the 2nd period saw the home side down to 14 as Ollie Symonds got a yellow card for a dangerous tip tackle that on another day might have been red. Wills struck a great touch finder to 5 metres and the driving maul did the rest for another unconverted Pritchard try to put the Reds 17-10 to the good. A great deal of midfield action now unfolded with neither team able to threaten the line with defences of both teams looking secure. On 55 minutes a line break by Sam James was only halted by a high tackle by Bertie Fordham who earned himself a yellow card. Wills made no mistake from the kicking tee to put the Reds 10 points clear. A few minutes later the Reds had a 5 metre line out but the line out was lost and Services were able to clear. Services crucially got the next score, a great line break by one of the Services substitutes took play from the 10 metre line almost to the try line and Shaun Crawford was on hand to go over in the corner for another try that went unconverted to make it a 5 point game on 63 minutes. King did well to claim the restart giving the Reds a foot hold in the Devonport half, a big scrum then earned a penalty which Wills slotted from fully 40 metres wide out to put the Reds 8 ahead on 66 minutes. A scrum penalty awarded to Services gave them a 5 metre line out which was followed by another which the Reds did well to hold up and earn the defensive scrum. The Services ran the ball back from a goal line drop out and after many phases earned a penalty from the breakdown. The Reds though defended well from the line out and won the ball back but crucially knocked on under their own posts. From the scrum the ball was moved to the right wing and Luke Stannard scored in the corner, yet again the try went unconverted and the Services were within 3 points with 6 minutes remaining. With couple of minutes remaining Chris Mills got a yellow card and the penalty got the home side deep into the Reds half. The home side threw the kitchen sink at the Reds but the visitors were defending well. In the last play of the match the home side mauled over the line for the winning try by fly-half Richard Goldsby-West to their understandable delight. Goldsby-West converted to put the icing on the cake for the home side.
The Reds will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday when they host Macclesfield.
