On Saturday Redruth welcome to the Recreation Ground Newport (Salop) RFC with a 2pm Kick-off.
Our visitors travel down from the beautiful county of Shropshire and fly the flag for the county on the national league stage. It may seem somewhat strange that a landlocked county should have a town called 'Newport' and have as its coat-of-arms three fishes. I shall explain, the 'port' in the name hints at the importance of fishing and, in medieval times, the area included a chain of lakes of which Aqualete Mere (in neighbouring Staffordshire) is the only surviving example. The burgesses of Newport owed their ancient liberties to the supply of fish to the king's court. The last remnant of the fishing industry - a vivary - was destroyed in 1836 when the Shropshire canal was dug.
Newport have not had a great start to the season and have only been victorious in 2 of their 10 encounters. Their wins, both at home, coming against Bournville by 32-16 & Hinckley by 22-21. Last week they pushed Exeter University close only losing by 29-31 to a final kick of the game penalty. This leaves Newport in 13th place on 14 points with a -137 pints difference. Newport's top try scorer is Ethan Harley (winger) with 5 and their top points score is Connor Adams (Fly-Half) with 27.
Last season both sides won their home matches against each other. At the Recreation Ground in October the Reds won by the remarkable 97-7 running in 14 tries in the process. Five months later, Redruth in the midst of an injury crisis which got even worse within 20 mins of the start, took on an also much changed home side who turned the tables coming out on top by 43-24. What will Saturday's match hold?
The Reds come into this match after a disappointing day at Hinckley where they never did themselves justice and the home side ran out comfortable victors. The team will be determined to get back to winning ways this Saturday on home soil. Currently the Reds are in 7th place on 29 points having won 5, lost 4 and drawn 1 match.
Top try scorer for the Reds is Frankie Nowell on 6 and Jordan Gott is top points scorer with 36.
Look out for team news on Friday.
