Early on Saturday morning Redruth make the long trip to the West Midlands to take on Stourbridge RFC for the final game of the season.
Stourbridge RFC have been on and off opponents for the Reds since the inception of league rugby especially during the days when we were both at Level 3. After finishing in 4th place last year in National 2 North Stourbridge have found life in National 2 West much tougher going and will be relegated to Level 5 next season.
Their season got off to a bad start at Redruth where the Reds ran out comfortable victors by 43-8 and it never really looked up.
At present Stourbridge sit, and will finish, in 14th and last place on 21 points after winning only 2 of their 25 matches. Their victories have come against Old Reds 19-15 and Hornets 55-25 (back in October) despite this they have also come close a number of times and Saturdays match is no forgone conclusion. Last time out Stourbridge lost 47-31 at also relegated Barnstaple.
Their top try scorer is Jack Lea (hooker) on 16, an impressive total considering the league position. Top points scorer is also Jack Lea on 82, so he must have scored a conversion along the way as well. Richard Brown you have been challenged!
Stourbridge have excellent facilities which include a floodlit RFU funded 3G pitch which is flanked by a very good clubhouse and one of the best grandstands in the league. The ground is situated a little outside of the town which has a population in the order of 55,000. I've two experiences of the town, neither that good sadly. The first visit some 20 years ago failed to find any pubs in the town centre serving food and my group ended up having the worst Indian meal we had ever eaten with the predictable aftermath! The second visit in a narrow boat last year went no better, having decided that the moorings did not look that safe, security wise, on leaving the area we snagged a pair of shorts on the boat prop and it took me an hour to cut it loose in the mucky canal water, not pleasant!
The Reds come into this match in good spirits after only just coming 2nd best to Loughborough Students in the exciting final home match last Saturday. A four figure crowd were fantastically entertained with the Reds coming within a 'stretch to the line' from snatching victory at the last. It was not to be and the Students ran out victors by 31-33.
The Mini/Junior parade at half time was a great spectacle with the young men and women looking very smart in their shirts and ties and covering the entire length of the field.
Redruth currently stand in 7th place on 74 points having won 14 of their 25 matches. Redruth will finish the season either in 6th, 7th or 8th place depending on results.
Stats: No change here Frazer Honey has notched up 165 points and try wise Richard Brown leads the way on 17 which makes him the 2nd highest try scorer in National 2 West behind Devon Constant of Leicester Lions.
Referee: James Dowds
Assistant Referees: Adam Hughes & Adam Carpenter
